The Real Downsides of Using Your Home Address
We're not going to pretend a home address is a disaster for every business, but we've seen the same problems come up repeatedly for clients before they switch to us.
The biggest one is privacy. Once your home address is on the public record at Companies House, it's there for anyone to see. That means unexpected visitors can, and do, turn up on your doorstep. For a lot of our clients, that's simply not something they're comfortable with. Your home is where your family lives. It shouldn't also be your business's front door.
The second issue is mail. A registered business address attracts a lot of post, much of it unsolicited marketing, and that starts landing on your doormat instead of staying neatly contained within a professional mail-handling service.
Both of these are avoidable, and that's really the heart of why we exist as a service.
When a Home Address Is Actually Fine
We'll always give people honest advice, even if it means talking them out of a package they don't need.
If you're a business that works from home permanently, and by nature that's simply how your business operates, a home address can be a reasonable choice. Not every business needs a prestigious address to function well.
But even then, we'd ask the question: do you really want the possibility of unwanted visitors turning up at your door? For us, the answer is usually no. Having a professional image and outlook doesn't just look better to clients and suppliers, it makes your business more viable in the long run. A virtual office solves the privacy problem while still giving you the flexibility to work from home day to day. You get the best of both worlds.
What You Actually Get With a Virtual Office
Not all virtual offices are the same, and it's worth understanding what you're paying for. At Leigh House, we offer three tiers, Basic, Plus and Ultimate, because different businesses need different things.
At the simplest level, you're getting a professional business address and mail handling. That alone solves the privacy and clutter problems we've already talked about.
Move up the tiers and you can add Companies House registration at our address, and if you want to go further, a VoIP telephone number. This comes with a mobile app so you can answer your own business calls wherever you are, giving you a professional phone presence without being tied to a desk or a landline.
Every one of our packages also offers a discount should you want to meet your own clients face to face at Leigh House itself, which is something a lot of new clients don't expect but end up valuing more than they anticipated. Even when your business runs virtually day to day, there are moments where meeting someone in person, in a proper professional space, matters.
What Makes Leigh House Different?
We're a little unusual as a virtual office provider because Leigh House isn't a generic city-centre tower block. We're a small, independent, Grade II listed building in Pudsey, between Leeds and Bradford, with a genuinely lovely south-facing view. It's not the kind of building you'd expect to find serving as a business hub, and that's exactly why our clients like it.
We also offer serviced office space alongside our virtual offices, so if a business does eventually outgrow the virtual set-up and wants a physical base, they don't need to go anywhere else. We can grow with them.
For clients who want to meet in person, whether that's with their own customers or just to get out of the house for a change of scenery, having access to a characterful, well-maintained period building makes a real difference to how the business is perceived.
